THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO MOTORCYCLE TOURING IN SOUTHEAST ASIA
Everything below comes from the tour itself: our 19-day, four-country expedition through Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia, and the day-by-day itinerary further up this page. If you are weighing up Southeast Asia as your next motorcycle destination, this is the long answer — how the roughly 3,850 km route actually unfolds, what you will see between Chiang Mai and Pattaya, and the practical details of bikes, group size and payment.
WHY RIDE SOUTHEAST ASIA BY MOTORCYCLE?
Most riders who dream about Southeast Asia dream about one country at a time. Our 19-day Discover Southeast Asia Expedition rides four of them in a single loop: it starts in the mountain-cradled city of Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand, crosses the Golden Triangle into the remote hills of Laos, takes on a significant border crossing into Vietnam, continues with a fourth crossing into Cambodia, and finally rolls back into Thailand along the Gulf coast to finish in Pattaya. Four distinct nations, four border crossings, one motorcycle — and the bike permits are included in the tour price, along with the return transport of the motorcycle from Pattaya.
What makes this a motorcycle route rather than a sightseeing circuit is the roads themselves. In Laos you ride the 'Roads Less Traveled' — a challenging, rewarding run through remote Laotian hills and local villages to the Mekong riverside town of Pak Beng, then newly paved roads winding through dense jungle toward Luang Prabang. In Vietnam you begin your ride on the legendary Ho Chi Minh Trail, one of the most significant motorcycling roads anywhere, winding through limestone karsts and jungle to the coast. And in Cambodia the riding turns rural: pepper plantations, stilt houses and village life all the way to the gateway of Angkor. Covering approximately 3,850 km of diverse terrain — from winding mountain roads and dense jungle passes to historic highways — this expedition is the ultimate test of endurance and cultural immersion.
The route is also built to breathe. Three full rest days are placed exactly where you want them: in the UNESCO World Heritage city of Luang Prabang, in ancient lantern-lit Hoi An, and in Siem Reap for a full day among the temples of Angkor Wat. High-mileage riding days — the longest is the 350 km run from Hoi An into Vietnam's Central Highlands — are balanced by zero-kilometer days where the bike stays parked and the culture takes over. That rhythm is what lets a 19-day, four-country expedition feel like a journey rather than a race.
HOW HARD IS THE RIDING? 5% OFF-ROAD, 75% COMFORT, 100% FUN
We publish a terrain profile for every tour so you can match the route to your skills before you book. Southeast Asia rates 5% off-road, 75% comfort and 100% fun — in plain words, this is a road-focused expedition where the overwhelming majority of the riding is on pavement, with the character coming from where those paved roads go rather than from technical dirt. If you are a confident street rider with the endurance for consecutive 200–350 km days, this route is within reach; tours like Namibia are the ones we reserve for experienced dirt and enduro riders, not Southeast Asia.
The comfort score of 75% reflects what a long expedition through four countries honestly is: 18 nights of accommodation in shared rooms, including characterful stops like the unique and remote Rock Forest Lodge in the dramatic karst landscape of Phouphamarn, Laos. This is real overland travel — border days, jungle passes, remote hill country — supported the whole way. A local guide and support vehicle travel with the group for the entire route, a professional multilingual tour leader rides with you, and fuel and road tolls are covered, so your only job each morning is to ride.
The riding itself changes character with every border. Northern Thailand opens with a scenic 200 km mountain ride from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai. Laos delivers the wildest stretches: 320 km from Chiang Rai to Luang Namtha into the jungle-clad north, the remote hills down to Pak Beng, and later an exhilarating 320 km day south to the capital, Vientiane. Vietnam brings the Ho Chi Minh Trail, a beautiful coastal and mountain ride connecting the historic city of Hue to Hoi An, and the stunning mountain passes of the Central Highlands (Tay Nguyen), famed for coffee plantations and tribal culture. Cambodia rides flatter and more rural, deep into the countryside toward Siem Reap, before the final rewarding leg along the Gulf of Thailand coast into Pattaya. Four countries, four distinct kinds of riding — that is the 100% fun score doing its job.
FOUR COUNTRIES, FOUR BORDER CROSSINGS — HOW THE ROUTE FLOWS
Border crossings are usually the part of a multi-country motorcycle trip that riders dread; on this expedition they are milestones we handle for you. The sequence is deliberate. Days 1–2 warm you up in Thailand, from the arrival briefing and first group dinner in Chiang Mai to the White Temple (Wat Rong Khun) in Chiang Rai. Day 3 delivers the first crossing, into Laos, right at the famous Golden Triangle where three countries meet — you witness the convergence, cross the Mekong River, and challenge yourself on the remote roads of Northern Laos.
Days 4–8 belong to Laos: Pak Beng, Luang Prabang and its rest day, Vientiane with landmarks like the Patuxai Gate and Pha That Luang, and the karst country of Phouphamarn. Day 9 is the big one — the significant border crossing into Vietnam and the start of the Ho Chi Minh Trail, with the incredible Paradise Cave as the day's target. Days 10–13 run through the DMZ, down the coast to Hoi An and inland to Pleiku. Day 14 crosses the fourth border, into Cambodia, and days 15–17 carry you through Stung Treng, Siem Reap and Pailin, passing the French colonial architecture of Battambang Old Town. Day 18 is the final crossing back into Thailand and the coastal run to Pattaya, and day 19 is a last breakfast before the airport transfer. Nineteen days, and not one of them wasted on logistics — because the logistics are our job, not yours.
WHAT ARE THE CULTURE & STOPS ALONG THE SOUTHEAST ASIA MOTORCYCLE ROUTE?
Southeast Asia rewards riders who get off the bike, and the itinerary builds that in. These are the cultural anchors of the tour, country by country:
- Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, Thailand (days 1–2). The tour opens in the historic capital of Northern Thailand and heads to Chiang Rai for the ethereal, striking White Temple — one of the most photographed sights in the region and the first highlight of the trip.
- The Golden Triangle (day 3). The point where three nations meet, and the symbolic start of the expedition proper as the route crosses the Mekong into Laos.
- Luang Prabang, Laos (days 5–6). The spiritual heart of Laos and a UNESCO World Heritage city, with a full rest day to witness the morning Alms Ceremony or visit the stunning Kuang Si Falls.
- Vientiane (day 7). The Lao capital delivers the Patuxai Gate and Pha That Luang at the end of an exhilarating riding day.
- The Ho Chi Minh Trail and Paradise Cave, Vietnam (day 9). History you can ride: a legendary section of one of motorcycling's most significant roads, with the incredible Paradise Cave as the day's visit.
- The DMZ and Vĩnh Mốc Tunnels (day 10). Vietnam War history at ground level — the Demilitarized Zone and the resilient tunnel network used during the war.
- Hoi An (days 11–12). A UNESCO World Heritage Site of lantern-lit riverside streets, with a rest day to relax on the beach, wander the vibrant markets, or have custom clothing made by a tailor.
- The Central Highlands (day 13). Tay Nguyen's coffee plantations, tribal culture and mountain passes on the longest riding day of the tour.
- Angkor Wat and Siem Reap, Cambodia (days 15–16). The emotional peak for many riders: a full day dedicated to the awe-inspiring ruins and jungle-covered temples of the former Khmer Empire, including sunrise over Angkor Wat and the jungle-covered Ta Prohm — the "Tomb Raider Temple".
- Battambang and the ride to Pattaya (days 17–18). French colonial architecture in Battambang Old Town, the border town of Pailin, and a final rewarding ride along the Gulf of Thailand coast.
Group activities and entry fees for these stops are included in the tour price, so there is no ticket-counter arithmetic along the way — when the group walks into Angkor, everyone walks in.
WHICH BIKES, WHAT GROUP SIZE & HOW DO YOU BOOK IN SOUTHEAST ASIA?
The motorcycles. The base bike is the Honda NX500, included in the tour price. If you prefer more displacement, four upgrades are available: the Triumph Tiger 900 for +$999, the BMW F900GS for +$999, the BMW R1250GS for +$1,799, or the flagship BMW R1300GS for +$1,799. All bikes are professionally maintained machines, and a damage and theft liability reduction insurance plus mandatory third-party liability insurance are already included. A refundable security deposit on your credit card is required to take the bike out, sized according to the rental bike you choose.
The group. We keep Southeast Asia deliberately small: minimum 6 riders, maximum 12, led by a certified multilingual tour leader with a local guide and support vehicle alongside. Riding two-up? The Add Pillion/Passenger option (+$6,299) covers your co-rider. Accommodation is in shared rooms by default, with a single-room upgrade available for +$1,799.
What the price covers. The tour starts at $10,499 per rider on the Honda NX500 in a shared room. That includes 18 nights of accommodation, all breakfasts, fuel, road tolls and bike permits, return transport of the motorcycle from Pattaya, airport transfers from and to Chiang Mai International (CNX) and Bangkok International (BKK) on official arrival and departure days, group activities and entry fees, a pre-tour preparation guide and briefing, a MotoDreamer Appeal Gift, up to 25% discount on riding gear from our partners Klim, Giant Loop and Mosko Moto, and all taxes. Airfare, lunches, dinners and drinks, personal paperwork and visas, tips, and travel insurance are not included — for travel and cancellation cover we point riders to Global Rescue.
Booking and payment. Hit Book Now, pick your date and pay the deposit; we accept bank transfer, Visa, Mastercard, American Express, PayPal and Bitcoin, and you can split the balance into monthly payments with no interest. Booking as a group is rewarded: when 5 riders pay, rider number 6 travels free. Every booking is backed by our price match and departure guarantees. The next scheduled departure is October 14 to November 1, 2027, and private group dates are available for groups of 6 or more riders.
Who can join. You need to be 20 or older with at least one year of experience on a 500cc-or-bigger motorcycle, hold a valid driver's license with motorcycle endorsement, and carry a passport with at least six months' validity at tour start. That is the whole bar — if you ride confidently at home and can string long days together, this route is for you.
Seventeen-plus years of operating tours and more than 4,000 riders have shaped how we run Southeast Asia — from the first briefing dinner in Chiang Mai to the last breakfast in Pattaya, four countries later.
