THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO MOTORCYCLE TOURING IN NORWAY

Everything below comes from the tour itself: our 12-day motorcycle route out of Oslo and back, the day-by-day itinerary further up this page, and the practical details of bikes, group size, eligibility and payment. One clarification first, because search engines love to blur it: this is a guided motorcycle tour of Norway — twelve days on adventure motorcycles through fjords, ferries and mountain passes — not a bicycle race. If you are weighing up Norway as your next motorcycle destination, this is the long answer.

WHY RIDE NORWAY BY MOTORCYCLE?

+–

Norway is the destination where the road itself is the attraction. Our route strings together, in a single loop from the capital, most of the riding roads that put the country on every motorcyclist's list: the historic Telemark Canal on the way to Dalen, the high-mountain road over Suleskard down to the fjord village of Lysebotn, the eleven legendary hairpin bends of Trollstigen, the Dalsnibba viewpoint above Geiranger with its spectacular fjord panoramas, and the Atlantic Road — that famous stretch of twisting coastal bridges — before the ride turns inland through Lillehammer, the historic Olympic town on the shores of Lake Mjøsa, and back to Oslo.

What makes Norway different from riding those same names off a map on your own is the water in between. Fjords cut the route apart, and scenic ferry crossings stitch it back together — on Lysefjord from Lysebotn to Songesand, from Ytterdal to Linge near Geirangerfjord, and across to Sølsnes on the way to the Atlantic Road. Those crossings are built into the itinerary on purpose: they break up the ride and give you time to soak in the steep fjord walls without throttling. Ferries, bridges and road tolls are all included in the tour price, so the only thing you manage on the water is your camera.

The tour also reaches places most visitors never see. On day six we continue past the old Strynefjell Road to Stadlandet, Norway's westernmost mainland point, with a dramatic coastal view — the kind of dead-end detour that only makes sense when someone who knows the country is planning your days. Add the Trollveggen wall and the Romsdal Gondola's mountain vistas at Åndalsnes, a possible detour to the Briksdalen glacier or the Loen cable car, and the Gudvangen Viking Center and Flåm Railway on day five, and you have a route that mixes Norway's engineering, geology and history in equal parts.

HOW HARD IS THE RIDING? 10% OFF-ROAD, 80% COMFORT, 100% FUN

+–

We publish a terrain profile for every tour so you can match the route to your skills before you book. Norway rates 10% off-road, 80% comfort and 100% fun — a road-focused motorcycle tour with just enough gravel to earn the word adventure. You'll tackle smooth highways, narrow cliff-side byways and seasonal gravel sections, with riding distances ranging from short 90 km days to longer 280 km stretches.

The gravel comes in two named doses. The first is on the Suleskard high-mountain road on day three, a route so alpine it closes in winter, on the way down to Lysebotn. The second is day ten's Aursjøveien, a gravel toll road running from Eresfjord to Sunndalsøra — one of the listed highlights of the tour rather than an obstacle on it. Between those, the character of the riding is mountain tarmac: the FV520 to Røldal through rugged terrain (also closed in winter), the scenic old road past the ski resort before Odda, the mountain roads from Flåm through Lærdal and Årdal and the stunning seasonal Tindeveien to Lom, the old Strynefjell Road, and of course Trollstigen itself, crossed on day eight from Valldal to Åndalsnes with sweeping views of jagged peaks and valleys.

Norway's weather changes fast, and the packing advice from the tour page is simple: bring layered, waterproof gear. Everything else that keeps a tour comfortable is our job. A professional multilingual tour leader rides with the group, a local guide and support vehicle travel alongside handling luggage and spares, and fuel, ferries, bridges and road tolls are covered. Overnights are eleven nights in carefully selected hotels — from canal-side estates to fjord-view lodges — all with en-suite comforts and hearty breakfasts. That is the 80% comfort score doing its job; the seasonal gravel and hairpins supply the other numbers.

THE NORWAY MOTORCYCLE ROUTE: OSLO TO THE FJORDS AND BACK

+–

The tour starts and finishes in Oslo, and every day has a headline. These are the anchors of the itinerary, in riding order:

  • Oslo (days 1 and 12). Airport pickup, pre-tour briefing and bike hand-over on arrival day, with museums, great food and urban culture if time allows — and a final day to enjoy the city before flying home. Day eleven ends with a celebratory dinner back in the capital.
  • Dalen and the Telemark Canal (day 2). Forested roads, peaceful lakes and rolling valleys to a charming village known for the historic canal and the grand Dalen Hotel — a perfect warm-up to the mountains.
  • Setesdal, Suleskard and Lysebotn (day 3). Through Brokke, over the high-mountain road, down to the fjord, then the ferry to Songesand and on to Sauda. Dramatic fjord views and remote mountain roads.
  • Røldal and Odda (day 4). The FV520 through rugged terrain, then the E134 and RV13 with the scenic old road past the ski resort on the menu.
  • Voss, Stalheim, Flåm and Lom (day 5). Optional gravel or tunnel routes, the Gudvangen Viking Center, the Flåm Railway, and the seasonal Tindeveien — the densest sightseeing day of the tour.
  • Stryn and Stadlandet (day 6). The scenic old Strynefjell Road, a possible detour to the Briksdalen glacier or Loen cable car, and Norway's westernmost mainland point.
  • Geiranger and Dalsnibba (day 7). RV15 and road 63 to the fjord, with the Dalsnibba lookout delivering the panorama every rider comes for.
  • Trollstigen and Åndalsnes (day 8). Ferry from Ytterdal to Linge, through Valldal, across the eleven hairpins, then Trollveggen and the Romsdal Gondola.
  • The Atlantic Road (day 9). East along Isfjorden with an optional Vengedalen detour, the ferry to Sølsnes, and the iconic coastal bridges.
  • Aursjøveien and Lillehammer (day 10). The gravel toll road to Sunndalsøra, then Oppdal and scenic inland roads to the historic Olympic town on Lake Mjøsa.

Group activities and entry fees for the stops are included in the tour price, so when the group heads for a gondola or a viewpoint, everyone goes. One honest note from the itinerary's own fine print: this is Norway, and the route may change if weather or road conditions would jeopardize the safety of the group — several of these roads literally close in winter, which is exactly why the tour runs in summer.

WHO THIS TOUR SUITS

+–

There are no tricks in the eligibility bar. To join, you need to be 20 or older with at least one year of experience on a 500cc-or-bigger motorcycle, hold a valid driver's license with motorcycle endorsement, carry a passport with at least six months' validity at tour start, and be physically and mentally fit to ride. A credit card with sufficient funds for the refundable security deposit — sized according to the rental bike you choose — completes the checklist. No bike leaves the rental facility unless all of the above are met.

Within that bar, the 10% off-road / 80% comfort profile tells you who the route rewards. If you are a confident street rider, this tour is well within reach: the vast majority of the riding is paved, and the gravel on Suleskard and Aursjøveien is a highlight rather than a filter. When you register, we ask you to rate your experience on big bikes, your adventure and off-road skills, and — most relevant here — your experience riding in tight mountain curves, because hairpin passes like Trollstigen are the signature of this route. You do not need enduro credentials; tours like Namibia are the ones we build specifically for experienced dirt riders, not Norway.

Distance-wise, days run from 90 km to 280 km, with ferry crossings breaking up the longer ones — a rhythm that suits riders who want full days in the saddle without marathon mileage. And because the group is deliberately small, six to ten riders, nobody rides in a fifty-bike parade: the certified tour leader briefs the group, the support vehicle carries the luggage, and you ride your own ride between the stops.

WHICH BIKES, WHAT GROUP SIZE & HOW DO YOU BOOK IN NORWAY?

+–

The motorcycles. The base bike is the CFMOTO 450 MT, included in the tour price. If you prefer more displacement, two upgrades are available: the CFMOTO 800MT-X for +$799 or the CFMOTO 1000MT-X for +$1,299. All bikes are latest-model, professionally maintained machines, the mandatory third-party liability insurance is included, and the mandatory motorcycle damage and theft liability reduction insurance is +$300. The refundable security deposit on your credit card depends on the bike you choose.

The group. Norway runs with a minimum of 6 and a maximum of 10 riders, led by a professional multilingual tour leader with a local guide and support vehicle alongside. Riding two-up? The Add Pillion/Passenger option (+$3,499) covers your co-rider. Accommodation is in shared rooms by default, with a single-room upgrade available for +$1,299.

What the price covers. The tour starts at $6,499 per rider on the CFMOTO 450 MT in a shared room. That includes 11 nights of accommodation, all breakfasts, the base motorcycle rental, fuel, ferries, bridges and road tolls, the mandatory third-party liability insurance, group activities and entry fees, a pre-tour preparation guide and briefing, transfers to and from Oslo International Airport (OSL) on official arrival and departure days, a MotoDreamer Appeal Gift, up to 25% discount on riding gear from our partners Klim, Giant Loop and Mosko Moto, and all taxes. Airfare, lunches, dinners and drinks, the motorcycle insurance ($300), personal paperwork and visas, and tips are not included — and for travel and cancellation insurance we point riders to Global Rescue.

Booking and payment. Hit Book Now, pick your date and pay the deposit; we accept bank transfer, Visa, Mastercard, American Express, PayPal and Bitcoin, and you can split the balance into monthly payments with no interest. Booking as a group is rewarded: when 5 riders pay, rider number 6 travels free, valid on the base tour price. Every booking is backed by our price match and departure guarantees. The next scheduled departure is June 23 to July 4, 2027, and private or customized group dates are available on request.

Seventeen-plus years of operating motorcycle tours and over 5,000 riders have shaped how we plan a country like this — which passes to take in which order, where the ferries save a day, and why the most famous roads in Norway are best ridden with someone who has ridden them before.
