Northern Thailand is home to some of the best motorcycle roads in Asia, and our 10-day loop is built around the very best of them: the road from Nan to Chiang Rai, along the Lao border. That single stretch — hilly roads, endless villages, rice paddies, fruit plantations and small farm villages threaded together by small back roads through the hinterland — is one of the best motorcycle roads in Thailand, and on this tour it is just the opening act. From Chiang Rai the route pushes on to the remote Phu Chi Fa mountain range with its views over the Mekong River and valley, then to the famous Golden Triangle, where Laos, Myanmar and Thailand meet, before swinging west through Doi Mae Salong, Thaton and the chic town of Pai to Mae Hong Son, Mae Sariang and finally Doi Inthanon National Park — home to Thailand's highest peak — on the way back to Chiang Mai.

What makes Thailand different from our other destinations is how much history and culture sits directly on the riding line. The White Temple in Chiang Rai — Wat Rong Khun — is today one of the main attractions in northern Thailand, and we visit it on day three, on the ride in from Nan. The Golden Triangle carries a darker chapter: decades ago the opium poppy provided a living to many in the region, until it was stopped in 1996 following the death of Khun Sa, a legendary warlord. We ride to the exact spot where the three countries meet, take the signature photo at Wat Pra That Pukhao, and get out on the Mekong itself by boat. Add the border to Myanmar, the Long Neck Hill Tribe, wildlife and other exotic creatures we encounter all along the route, and the countless shrines and temples of incredible religious architecture the road passes, and you have a tour where every fuel stop seems to sit next to something worth walking into.

And then there is the road every rider has heard of: the legendary route with 1,864 curves that connects Pai and Mae Hong Son to Mae Taeng. We do not just tick it off — the whole western half of the itinerary is built around it, crossing the mountains to Pai on day seven and riding the curves south towards Mae Hong Son on day eight. If tight mountain corners are the reason you ride, this is the stretch of Southeast Asia you came for.

The character of the riding changes almost daily. Day two out of Chiang Mai runs to Nan via hilly roads, with a lunch by the lake in Phayao and a coffee stop at Chiang Muang, riding through endless villages and rice paddies. Day three trades the main routes for small back roads through the hinterland — rice fields, fruit plantations, farm villages — before the White Temple and Chiang Rai. Day four heads east to Phu Sang National Park and Phu Chi Fa, where you ride along the mountain ridge itself with the Mekong River and valley below before descending. And then the western days deliver the famous stuff: crossing the mountains to Pai on the road with its 1,864 bends, the mountain run from Mae Hong Son to Mae Sariang, and the climb through Doi Inthanon National Park past Thailand's highest peak down to Chom Thong on the final riding day.

We also build in a full rest day in Chiang Rai on day five — no riding, just the city's center, traditional markets and street food stalls, local delicacies such as khao soi, and the region's famous coffee. On a 10-day tour with this much cornering, a mid-tour breather is not a luxury; it is what keeps days six through nine as much fun as days two through four.

Thailand rewards riders who get off the bike, and the itinerary builds that in. These are the cultural anchors of the tour, day by day:

• Chiang Mai (days 1 and 10). The tour opens and closes here. You fly into Chiang Mai International Airport, transfer to the hotel, and at 3 PM on day one we head to the bike rental center for the welcome briefing and motorcycle handover, followed by a short ride back to the hotel.
• Phayao and Nan (day 2). Lunch by the lake in Phayao, a coffee stop at Chiang Muang, and a first night in Nan after a day of villages and rice paddies.
• The White Temple (day 3). The remarkable Wat Rong Khun outside Chiang Rai — one of the main attractions in northern Thailand, visited before we reach the hotel.
• Phu Chi Fa and the Mekong (day 4). Phu Sang National Park, the remote Phu Chi Fa mountain range, and ridge-top views over the Mekong River and valley toward Laos.
• Chiang Rai rest day (day 5). Markets, street food stalls, khao soi and the region's famous coffee — a full day to be a traveler instead of a rider.
• The Golden Triangle (day 6). The meeting point of Thailand, Myanmar and Laos: the signature photo at Wat Pra That Pukhao, a boat ride on the Mekong River, and a visit to the Choui Fong Tea House and its tea plantation before the night in Doi Mae Salong.
• Thaton and Pai (day 7). The view from Wat Thaton, a coffee break at the Hua Luk Royal Project, the mountain crossing on the road of 1,864 bends, and a visit to an Elephant Camp near Pai — then a night in the chic town of Pai itself.
• Mae Hong Son (day 8). The hilltop temple Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu, with panoramic views of the town and the surrounding mountains, before the ride through the mountains to Mae Sariang.
• Doi Inthanon National Park (day 9). Thailand's highest peak, the King and Queen Pagodas and the nearby waterfall, then through the park to Chom Thong and back to Chiang Mai.

Group activities and entry fees for these stops are included in the tour price, so there is no ticket-counter arithmetic along the way — when the group walks into the White Temple, everyone walks in. One honest note: the itinerary is subject to change based on weather conditions and unforeseen circumstances, and we ask every rider to follow safety guidelines and wear appropriate gear throughout the ride.

The motorcycles. The base bike is the Honda NX500, included in the tour price. If you prefer more displacement, four upgrades are available: the Triumph Tiger 900 for +$499, the BMW F900GS for +$499, the BMW R1250GS for +$699, or the flagship BMW R1300GS for +$799. All bikes are latest-model, professionally maintained machines, and a motorcycle damage and theft liability reduction insurance plus mandatory third-party liability insurance are already included. A refundable security deposit on your credit card is required to take the bike out, sized according to the rental bike you choose — no bike leaves the rental facility without it.

The group. We keep Thailand deliberately small: minimum 6 riders, maximum 10, led by a certified multilingual tour leader with a local guide and support vehicle alongside. Riding two-up? The Add Pillion/Passenger option (+$2,999) covers your co-rider. Accommodation is in shared rooms by default, with a single-room upgrade available for +$799.

What the price covers. The tour starts at $5,499 per rider on the Honda NX500 in a shared room. That includes 9 nights of accommodation, all breakfasts, fuel and road tolls, group activities and entry fees, airport transfers from and to Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX) on official arrival and departure days, a pre-tour preparation guide and briefing, a MotoDreamer apparel gift, up to 25% discount on riding gear and accessories from our partners Klim, Giant Loop and Mosko Moto, and all taxes. Airfare, lunches, dinners and drinks, personal paperwork, permits and visas, tips to staff and travel insurance are not included — for travel and evacuation cover with cancellation protection we point riders to Global Rescue.

Booking and payment. Who can join. You need to be 20 or older with at least one year of experience on a 500cc-or-bigger motorcycle, hold a valid driver's license with motorcycle endorsement, and carry a passport with at least six months' validity at tour start.
