THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO MOTORCYCLE TOURING IN GREECE
Everything below comes from the tour itself: our 10-day route through seventeen lakes on the Greek mainland, the day-by-day itinerary further up this page, and the published details of bikes, group size, inclusions and payment. If you are weighing up Greece as your next motorcycle destination, this is the long answer — where the route actually goes, how the riding feels, and exactly what it takes to join.
WHY RIDE MAINLAND GREECE BY MOTORCYCLE?
Most people's mental picture of Greece is an island reached by ferry. Ours is different — and it is the whole point of this tour. Our 10-day loop starts and ends in Athens and never leaves the mainland, stringing together seventeen lakes across mountain country that mass tourism simply does not reach: Mornos, Trichonida, Evinos, Kremaston, Smokovu, Plastira, Pamvotida, Zorika, Aoou, Prespes, Kastorias, Zazari, Petron, Vegoritida, Polifitou and Marathon among them. Between the lakes sit the towns that give the ride its character — Nafpaktos, Karpenisi, Ioannina, Kastoria, St. Athanasios and Palaios Panteleimonas — plus one stop that needs no introduction at all: Meteora, the UNESCO World Heritage Site where ancient monasteries perch on top of towering rock formations.
This is Greece's unique blend of nature, history and culture experienced from the saddle rather than a sun lounger: picturesque mountain roads, serene waters, traditional villages, Byzantine heritage and dramatic geology, day after day. From the remote calm of Lake Zorika to the vibrant city of Ioannina, the route was built to immerse you in the country's hidden gems — the Greece that even many Greeks save for their own holidays.
And because the loop closes where it opened, logistics stay simple. We transfer you from Athens International Airport (ATH) on the official arrival day, brief the group at the hotel on day one, and transfer you back for your departure flight on day ten. One flight in, one flight out, and seventeen lakes in between.
HOW HARD IS THE RIDING? 5% OFF-ROAD, 85% COMFORT, 100% FUN
We publish a terrain profile for every tour so you can match the route to your skills before you book. Greece rates 5% off-road, 85% comfort and 100% fun — in plain words, a road-focused adventure that stays around 95% on pavement. As our FAQ above puts it, road-focused rides like Greece are well within reach of any confident street rider; tours like Namibia are the ones we build specifically for experienced dirt and enduro riders. Here, the challenge is not terrain — it is the sheer density of curves that mainland Greece packs between one lake and the next.
The distances tell you the shape of the tour. After the arrival day in Athens, the riding builds steadily: 309 kilometers through scenic mountain roads to Lake Mornos and Nafpaktos on day two, 286 kilometers past three lakes to Karpenisi on day three, 241 kilometers via the Smokovu and Plastira lakes to Meteora on day four, and 253 kilometers to Lake Pamvotida and Ioannina on day five. The middle of the tour eases off — 213 kilometers to Kastoria on day six and 235 kilometers to St. Athanasios on day seven, the two shortest riding days — before 275 kilometers to Palaios Panteleimonas on day eight and the big 419-kilometer finale from Lake Marathon back into Athens on day nine. Add it up and the eight riding days cover just over 2,200 kilometers of mainland Greece.
Day three deserves a special mention for route connoisseurs: 286 kilometers past Trichonida, Evinos and Kremaston, through some of the most scenic and remote parts of Greece. If your idea of a perfect riding day is tranquil water on one side, lush mountains on the other and hardly anyone else on the road, that is the day this tour was designed around.
You never ride it alone, and you never ride it unsupported. A professional multilingual tour leader rides with the group, a local guide and support vehicle travel alongside the entire way, and fuel and road tolls are covered. Nine nights of accommodation, all breakfasts and every group activity and entry fee are included — that is the 85% comfort score doing its job. Adventure on this tour means remote mountain roads, not roughing it.
SEVENTEEN LAKES, DAY BY DAY
Because the lakes are the backbone of the route, here is how they unfold across the itinerary:
- Lake Mornos (day 2). The opening statement: serene mountain roads to a stunning reservoir surrounded by lush greenery and traditional villages — a perfect first stop to connect with nature before rolling into Nafpaktos for the night.
- Trichonida, Evinos and Kremaston (day 3). Three lakes in one day on the remote run to Karpenisi, through some of the most scenic country in Greece.
- Smokovu and Plastira (day 4). Two serene lakes as the warm-up act for Meteora's awe-inspiring rock formations — the day that pairs calm water with dramatic geology.
- Pamvotida (day 5). The captivating lake beside Ioannina; the itinerary builds in a relaxing stretch by the water before you explore the city's rich history and culture.
- Zorika, Aoou, Prespes and Kastorias (day 6). The tour's biggest lake haul: four in a single 213-kilometer day, ending on the picturesque lakeside of Kastoria.
- Zazari, Petron and Vegoritida (day 7). Three more lakes threaded through peaceful countryside on the way to the village of St. Athanasios.
- Polifitou (day 8). The lake that hands you over to Palaios Panteleimonas and the slopes of Mount Olympus.
- Marathon (day 9). The final lake of the tour, launching the 419-kilometer run home to Athens.
No ferries, no port queues, no timetables — every one of these is reached on a motorcycle, on a road, most of them mountain roads you would struggle to find on your own.
TOWNS & CULTURE ALONG THE GREEK LAKES ROUTE
Greece rewards riders who get off the bike, and the itinerary builds that in. These are the cultural anchors of the tour:
- Athens (days 1 and 10). The vibrant capital opens and closes the loop — arrival, group briefing and hotel night at the start, and the final rolling arrival at the end of day nine before the airport transfer home.
- Nafpaktos (day 2). The picturesque town that ends the first riding day, paired with the tranquil waters of Lake Mornos.
- Meteora (day 4). The headline stop: a UNESCO World Heritage Site where ancient monasteries sit on top of towering rock pillars. Winding roads deliver you straight into the mystical charm of one of Greece's most iconic destinations.
- Ioannina (day 5). A charming lakeside city rich in history and culture — the itinerary deliberately leaves time to discover it rather than just sleep in it.
- Kastoria (day 6). An enchanting town known for its Byzantine heritage and picturesque views over its lake.
- Palaios Panteleimonas (day 8). A restored traditional village nestled on Mount Olympus — cobblestone streets, cozy tavernas and stunning views over the Aegean coastline. Step into the past for a night before the final riding day.
Group activities and entry fees along the route are included in the tour price, so there is no ticket-counter arithmetic — when the group stops, everyone goes in.
WHO THIS TOUR SUITS
We publish an off-road percentage and a comfort rating for every tour precisely so you can answer this question before you book, and Greece's 5/85/100 profile makes it one of the most accessible routes in our catalog. If you ride confidently at home on paved roads, you can ride this tour. The 5% off-road content adds flavor, not difficulty, and a certified tour leader briefs the group every morning with the crew supporting you the whole way.
The formal bar to entry is deliberately simple: you must be 20 or older with at least one year of experience on a 500cc-or-bigger motorcycle, hold a valid driver's license with motorcycle endorsement, carry a passport with at least six months' validity at tour start, and have a credit card with sufficient funds for the refundable security deposit, which is sized according to the rental bike you choose. No bike leaves the rental facility unless all of that is in order — a rule that protects the whole group, not just us.
Where experience does pay off is in the curves. Our registration form asks every rider to rate their experience in tight mountain curves for a reason: with eight riding days averaging well over 250 kilometers of lake-and-mountain roads, this is a tour for riders who enjoy working a motorcycle through bends all day. Riding two-up? The Add Pillion/Passenger option covers your co-rider. Prefer your own space at night? Shared rooms are the default, with a single-room upgrade available. And if you want the route to yourselves, private group and customized tours are available on request — with our standing group deal, when 5 riders pay, rider number 6 travels free.
WHICH BIKES, WHAT GROUP SIZE & HOW DO YOU BOOK IN GREECE?
The motorcycles. The base bike included in the tour price is the BMW F750GS. If you prefer more displacement, upgrades are listed right next to the price above: the BMW F900XR for +$499, the BMW R1250GS for +$699, or the flagship BMW R1300GS for +$799. All bikes are professionally maintained, latest-model machines, and both mandatory third-party liability insurance and motorcycle damage and theft liability reduction insurance are already included.
The group. We keep Greece deliberately small: minimum 5 riders, maximum 10, led by a professional multilingual tour leader with a local guide and support vehicle alongside. Small groups are how a route this intricate stays flexible — and how everyone gets to ride it at their own pace.
What the price covers. The tour starts at $5,499 per rider on the BMW F750GS in a shared room. That includes 9 nights of accommodation, all breakfasts, fuel and road tolls, group activities and entry fees, transfers to and from Athens International Airport (ATH) on the official arrival and departure days, a pre-tour preparation guide and briefing, up to 25% discount on riding gear and accessories from our partners Klim, Giant Loop and Mosko Moto, a MotoDreamer Appeal Gift, and all taxes — all backed by our Price Match Guarantee. Not included: airfare, upgrades, lunches, dinners and drinks, personal paperwork and visas, tips to staff, and travel and cancellation insurance, which is available from Global Rescue. A single room is +$799 and the pillion/passenger option is +$2,999.
Booking and payment. Hit Book Now, pick your date and pay the deposit; we accept bank transfer, Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Bitcoin, and you can split the balance into monthly payments with no interest. The next confirmed departure is May 21 to 30, 2027, and private or customized group dates can be arranged — remember, when 5 riders in a group pay, rider 6 rides free on the base tour price.
Everything we do is based on safety first — our destinations, routes, bikes and partners are all chosen on that principle, shaped by 17+ years of operating motorcycle tours for more than 4,000 riders. Mainland Greece and its seventeen lakes is one of the routes we are proudest of, because it shows riders a Greece that almost nobody else sees. The islands can wait; the mountains are calling.
