This 10-Day 4×4 Caribbean Desert Tour is for real adventurous travelers. It’s a rough, tough, and incredibly revitalizing journey into the unknown. We go where no one else goes – where the cell signal ends.

The Guajira desert is the least developed area of Colombia with next to no infrastructure. We circumnavigate the entire peninsula and experience a real desert and its original inhabitants. – The Wayuu tribe who for centuries fought off the Spanish conquistadors. We eat fresh lobster and enjoy the Caribbean beaches as we overland in strong 4×4 Toyota trucks!

TOUR ITINERARY

DAY 1

Fly-in to Cartagena. Motolombia staff pick you up at the airport and bring you to the hotel. Depending on what time in the day you arrive, we will meet all participants for a group presentation and tour briefing.

DAY 2

Cartagena to Rioacha – After breakfast and check out we get ready for a bus ride that will take us to Rioacha. It will follow the coastal route along the Caribbean ocean. About an hour out of Cartagena we stop at the Totumo mud volcano. Those who are up for it can take a healthy swim in the phosphorus-smelling mud inside the volcano. Then we continue along the beautiful coast to Rioacha on the edge of the Guajira. In the afternoon we will inspect and prepare the 4WD trucks for our expedition.

DAY 3

Rioacha to Puerto Lopez – The day has arrived when the true fun begins. After a short stint on the pavement to the last real civilization Uribia we hit the dirt. But first, we make provisions of fuel and food for charity handouts and to last for the entire desert stay. Finally going off-road. Its fast paces hard-packed at first and then becomes loser the closer we get to the Venezuelan border and our destination Puerto Lopez.

DAY 4

Puerto Lopez to Nazareth – After a night in a hammock during our most primitive stay on the tour and some breakfast, we head down to the beach to visit the ruins of once smugglers paradise Puerto Lopez. And earlier Colombian government bombed the village to overcome the illegal importing and exporting to the Caribbean islands. We also visit a rack that fell from the sky. A truly interesting site, an untouched meteor. Finally lot of dirt riding for a full day to reach Nazareth.

DAY 5

Nazareth to Punta Gallinas – From Nazareth, it’s a full day of off-roading. All types of surfaces will come our way and we will even enjoy some sand dunes at the end of the day near the most northern point of the South American continent Punta Gallinas.

DAY 6

Punta de Gallinas to Cabo de la Vela – In the morning we have an option to go see pink flamingos on a small boat trip. And then we have some real desert driving waiting. Vast flat beach-like sandy areas for miles and miles until we reach the now touristic beach village of Cabo de la Vela.

DAY 7

Rest-day: Cabo de la Vela, beach and water sport day. If you have ever wanted to try kite surfing this is the place. Calm beautiful Caribbean waters and white beaches as long as the eye can reach. A well-deserved day of chill with a Caribbean vibe and of course fresh-caught lobster for dinner.

DAY 8

Cabo de la Vela to Palomino – We end the off-road part of our tour around noon making the full circle back to Uribia and then we get on the pavement to reach our destination for the night, the super trendy Caribbean beach town of palomino. This is a great place to get a few cocktails on a beach bar and celebrate a week of desert challenges.

DAY 9

Palomino to Cartagena, Our last day of driving is a relaxed paved drive back to Cartagena. We stop in historic Santa Marta and a quick visit to Minca a little up the Sierra Nevada Mountains. We arrive in Cartagena for a final supper and night of the tour.

DAY 10

Fly-out from Cartagena – Motolombia staff will take you to the airport in time for your flight. If you wish to stay longer we are happy to help you make arrangements. We strongly suggest staying in Cartagena for a day or two after the 4WD tour to enjoy some more beaches and the city.
