THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO MOTORCYCLE TOURING IN OMAN
Everything below comes from the tour itself: our 10-day route through the UAE and Oman, the day-by-day itinerary further up this page, and what the riders who have already ridden it with us said on camera when they handed the keys back. If you are weighing up Oman as your next motorcycle destination, this is the long answer — how the riding actually feels, what you will see between Dubai and the Wahiba Sands, and the practical details of bikes, group size and payment.
WHY RIDE OMAN BY MOTORCYCLE?
Oman is one of those rare destinations where a single 10-day loop delivers several different countries' worth of scenery. Our route strings together the skyscrapers of Dubai, the fisherman's port of Sohar, the summit views of Jebel Shams — the highest mountain in Oman — the ancient mud-brick village of Al Hamra, the capital Muscat, the coastline down to Sur, a night among the golden dunes of the Wahiba Sands, the terraced gardens of Jebel Akhdar, the fort and souq of Nizwa, and Jebel Hafeet back on the UAE side before the ride rolls into Dubai again. Two countries, two border crossings — and we handle the motorcycle border permits, which are included in the tour price.
That diversity is not marketing language; it is the first thing our riders mention. Mark Pelosky from the USA, who rode the tour on the Yamaha T700 in November 2023, summed up his 10 days as a "beautiful ride" with "a lot of diversity" — deserts, mountains, wadis, swimming holes and the ocean, all in one trip. JD from the USA, who is riding a motorcycle around the world and joined us in Oman on his ninth group trip, called it simply "a first class trip". When a rider with nine organized tours behind him says everything from the riding to the culture "was just first class", that tells you more about Oman — and about how we run it — than any brochure paragraph could.
There is also the contrast that makes this tour unlike anything else in our catalog: you begin and end in Dubai, a city of stunning skyscrapers and luxurious malls, and within a day of riding you are in a country of forts, souqs and mud-brick villages where tradition still sets the rhythm. The itinerary is deliberately built so that modernity and tradition frame each other — Burj Khalifa territory on day one, the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque and a traditional Dhow boat tour by day four, and a night under the stars in a desert camp by day six.

HOW HARD IS THE RIDING? 5% OFF-ROAD, 85% COMFORT, 100% FUN
We publish a terrain profile for every tour so you can match the route to your skills before you book. Oman rates 5% off-road, 85% comfort and 100% fun — in plain words, this is a road-focused adventure that stays around 95% on pavement, with short, optional-feeling stretches of dirt that add flavor without demanding enduro experience. If you are a confident street rider, this route is well within reach; tours like Namibia are the ones we reserve for experienced dirt riders, not Oman.
What does that 5% look like on the ground? The best example is day five, the roughly 220 km run from Muscat to Sur, where off-road stretches hug the Omani coastline — gravel with the Arabian Sea on your shoulder. The rest of the tour runs on pavement through remarkably varied terrain: the 350 km border-crossing day from Dubai to Sohar, the climb to Jebel Shams with its panoramic summit views over the deepest canyons in Oman, the 170 km leg from Al Hamra to Muscat, and the roughly 250 km day from the Wahiba Sands up to Jebel Akhdar in Saiq, where terraced gardens and cool mountain air replace the desert floor. The final riding days mix mountainous terrain and desert landscapes on the way to Jebel Hafeet and back into Dubai.
Rider verdicts back up the road quality. Rolf Motland from Norway wrapped up his 10 days with "good weather, good trails, good roads" and rated the whole thing "super good". And Mark Pelosky's memorable phrase for the mountain sections — "freaking crazy mountains" — is exactly the kind of riding the Jebel Shams and Jebel Akhdar days deliver. He also pointed out something we plan on purpose: the route is sequenced so that some of the most beautiful views come in the closing days, not the opening ones, so the tour builds rather than fades.
A support vehicle and a local guide travel with the group the entire way, a professional multilingual tour leader rides with you, and fuel and road tolls are covered. Nine nights are in accommodation — eight in hand-picked hotels and one in a luxury desert camp in the Wahiba Sands with spacious tents, real beds (two per tent) and full board — so "adventure" here never means roughing it. That is the 85% comfort score doing its job.
WHAT ARE THE CULTURE & STOPS ALONG THE OMAN MOTORCYCLE ROUTE?
Oman rewards riders who get off the bike, and the itinerary builds that in. These are the cultural anchors of the tour, day by day:
- Dubai (days 1 and 10). The tour opens and closes in the UAE's showcase city — iconic landmarks like the Burj Khalifa, luxurious shopping malls, and a taste of desert-meets-modernity before and after the riding.
- Sohar (day 2). First night in Oman, in a city with a rich history and a picturesque fisherman's port.
- Al Hamra (day 3). An ancient village of well-preserved mud-brick houses — the closest thing on the route to stepping into traditional Omani life as it was lived for centuries.
- Muscat (day 4). The capital delivers the tour's densest cultural day: the grandeur of the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, the lively alleys of Mutrah Souq, and a traditional Dhow boat tour on Muscat's serene waters to end the day.
- The Bimah sinkhole and the Arabian Sea (day 5). On the coastal run to Sur we visit the Bimah sinkhole, and the tour highlights include a swim in the Arabian Sea — the "swimming holes" and "the ocean" our riders keep mentioning on camera.
- Sur (days 5–6). A historic town of maritime heritage and charming architecture — the "old ships" Adam talks about in his testimonial.
- Wahiba Sands (day 6). A vast sea of golden dunes and the emotional peak of the tour for many riders: massive sand dunes, then a night sleeping under the stars in the luxury desert camp.
- Jebel Akhdar and Nizwa (days 7–8). Terraced villages and gardens in the cool mountain air of Saiq, followed by Nizwa Fort and Souq — the concentrated heart of Oman's cultural heritage.
- Jebel Hafeet (day 8–9). Back across the border, one last mountain on the UAE side before the final run into Dubai.
Group activities and entry fees for these stops are included in the tour price, so there is no ticket-counter arithmetic along the way — when the group walks into Nizwa Fort, everyone walks in.
WHICH BIKES, WHAT GROUP SIZE & HOW DO YOU BOOK IN OMAN?
The motorcycles. The base bike is the Yamaha Tenere 700 — the "Beast", as Mark Pelosky called his — included in the tour price. If you prefer more displacement, three upgrades are available: the BMW F900GS for +$399, the BMW R1250GS for +$599, or the flagship BMW R1300GS for +$799. All bikes are latest-model, professionally maintained machines, and a damage and theft liability reduction insurance plus mandatory third-party liability insurance are already included. A refundable security deposit on your credit card is required to take the bike out, sized according to the rental bike you choose.
The group. We keep Oman deliberately small: minimum 5 riders, maximum 10, led by a certified multilingual tour leader with a local guide and support vehicle alongside. Riding two-up? The Add Pillion/Passenger option (+$2,999) covers your co-rider. Accommodation is in shared rooms by default, with a single-room upgrade available for +$799.
What the price covers. The tour starts at $5,499 per rider on the Yamaha T700 in a shared room. That includes 8 hotel nights plus the desert camp night, all breakfasts, fuel and road tolls, motorcycle border-crossing permits, airport transfers from and to Dubai International (DXB) on official arrival and departure days, group activities and entry fees, a pre-tour preparation guide and briefing, up to 25% discount on riding gear from our partners Klim, Giant Loop and Mosko Moto, and all taxes. Airfare, lunches, dinners and drinks, visas and travel insurance are not included — for travel and evacuation cover with cancellation protection we point riders to Global Rescue.
Booking and payment. Hit Book Now, pick your date and pay the deposit; we accept bank transfer, Visa, Mastercard, American Express, PayPal and Bitcoin, and you can split the balance into monthly payments with no interest. Booking as a group is rewarded: when 5 riders pay, rider number 6 travels free (valid on the base tour price). Every booking is backed by our price match and departure guarantees. The next scheduled departure is November 12 to 21, 2027, and private or customized group dates are available on request.
Who can join. You need to be 20 or older with at least one year of experience on a 500cc-or-bigger motorcycle, hold a valid driver's license with motorcycle endorsement, and carry a passport with at least six months' validity at tour start. That is the whole bar — as our FAQ above puts it, if you ride confidently at home, this route is for you.
Seventeen-plus years of operating tours and more than 4,000 riders have shaped how we run Oman. Or, in Adam's closing words from his testimonial: "I'll be back for sure."
WHAT RIDERS SAY
★★★★★ 5.0 · from 7 rider reviews (transcribed from the video testimonials above)
★ 5.0 on TripAdvisor (27 reviews) · ★ 4.6 on Google (62 reviews)
Every testimonial on this page is transcribed from a video interview filmed at the end of the tour — you can watch them all here. Beyond the review cards, a few passages from those transcripts are worth reading in full, because they describe the experience better than we can.
On the way the route is sequenced, Mark Pelosky (USA, November 2023):
"It was particularly enjoyable for me to finish strong which means that at the end we had some of the more beautiful views the last couple days rather than the first couple days." Mark Pelosky · USA · transcribed from his video testimonial
And on the group itself, JD (USA, 2024), the round-the-world rider on his ninth organized tour:
"Wonderful group of people to ride with. Had a great time. Look forward to riding with them again." JD · USA · transcribed from his video testimonial
That mix — round-the-world veterans like JD riding alongside confident street riders on their first desert trip, each at their own pace — is typical of our Oman groups, and it is exactly what the reviews above describe.
